Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures today.

The most preferred filling material for this application, which is performed to shape the lips, add volume or contouring is hyaluronic acid, one of the natural building blocks of the body.

While lip filler applications can be performed to correct lip asymmetries, eliminate fine wrinkles around the lips, or simply to give the lips a more attractive, fuller appearance, as we age, there is a decrease in the volume of the lips, which occurs in different amounts depending on personal skin characteristics, thinning of the lips, fading of the lip contours, nose and lips. Problems such as elongation of the groove between the lips, blurring and enlargement of the lips can also be corrected with lip filler applications.

Since the lips are very mobile structures, the permanence of hyaluronic acid-containing fillers on the lips is slightly shorter than in other areas and generally lasts between 8-12 months, depending on the characteristics of the filler used. Due to the rapid metabolism at young ages, fillings can also melt faster.

Although the lips are very sensitive structures, topical anesthesia applied to the lips in the form of a cream 20-25 minutes before the procedure is usually sufficient for filler applications. Local anesthesia can also be applied with a needle for people who are allergic to these creams or have a very low pain threshold.

The filler material used in lip filler application generally contains hyaluronic acid, and 0.5-2 ml of filler is used for each injection, depending on the available lip volume and the desired result. Since there is usually no blurring of the lip contours in young people, only an application to add volume is sufficient, while in middle and older ages, an additional application to clarify the lip line may be required.

After lip filler applications, swelling is usually observed in the first 24-48 hours, then this edema decreases and the lips regain their new shape within a few days. In order to perform the application in a controlled manner with less edema formation, it may be preferred to apply the total volume in two or three sessions, one week apart.

What Should Be Considered Before Application?

In healthy individuals who do not use blood thinners, no preliminary preparation or testing is required before hyaluronic acid injection.

Things to Consider After Lip Filler Application

  • Cold should be applied for 10 minutes every first 3-4 hours.
  • Lipstick and other moisturizer-like creams should not be used for the first 24 hours.
  • During the first 24 hours, no movements such as kissing, bending or biting that will stretch the lip or distort its form should be avoided.
  • Heavy exercise should not be done for the first 24 hours

Is There Any Risk of Lip Filler?

Lips are very sensitive structures and in order for filler applications to yield good results, it is very important to perform them with appropriate techniques and to use quality products with high purity and appropriate density and content for lip applications.

The use of products whose properties are not suitable for the lips may cause deterioration in the shape of the lips or the formation of uncomfortable hardness inside the lips, while the use of low-quality products may cause the formation of hard, painful nodules called granulomas as a result of the reaction of the body defense system.

Since the lips are structures with very good blood supply, minor bleeding may occur after the application, but circulatory disorders due to fillers leaking into the veins are less common than other areas.

Provided that hyaluronic acid-containing fillers are used; it is generally possible to eliminate these problems with hyaluronidase enzyme injections in cases where more volume is created than desired or hardness occurs inside the lips.
